Time. The term is a fixed length at a fixed price, so everything demonstrated inside it is effectively free and everything not demonstrated is deferred into a term you pay for again. That reframes the whole strategy: sequencing matters more than polish, and an early submission with room for one return beats a perfect one sent late.

Because each lettered aspect is judged on its own, by somebody working down the list, rather than through an overall impression of the piece. A requirement you satisfied gradually across four pages — genuinely satisfied, just never in one findable place — is scored as not met, and the quality of the writing does not enter into it. So write to the shape of the rubric: its order, its headings, its vocabulary. It feels like form-filling and it is what the model is built to reward.

It is the most useful document the model gives you, and most students read only the score. The breakdown names the competency areas where you are weak, and that is where revision belongs. Studying broadly after a pre-assessment is the single most common way to waste a WGU term.

It can, and the failure mode is specific: submitting before the work is ready, then spending two revision cycles on something that could have been right once. Genuine acceleration comes from sequencing rather than hurrying — knowing which tasks need material built first so nothing waits on nothing.
