ACE — THE SHORTEST BLOCKS ON THIS LIST

Take my ACE class.

Five weeks is barely a settling-in period, and ACE runs whole graduate courses inside one. What decides the block is almost never how difficult the material is. It is whether the two or three evenings you set aside actually survived the school day they were attached to.

A fifth of the course is one bad week

That is the arithmetic and it is worth sitting with. In a five-week block, losing a week to parents' evening, a staffing crisis or a child of your own removes twenty percent of the time available. Nothing about the material caused it and no amount of ability prevents it.

Which is why everything here is scheduled ahead rather than on time. The block is mapped before the first assignment is written, and drafting runs a week in front of the dates. That margin absorbs exactly the unpredictability a working educator's term is made of, and it is the only thing that reliably does.

  • Every dated item in the block mapped before anything gets drafted
  • Drafting a week ahead, because a school week rarely goes to plan
  • Applications written from your own room, since ACE asks for that
  • Threads answered in the opening half of a block rather than its final days
  • Capstone and dissertation work planned across blocks, never inside one

Your classroom is the advantage, not the obstacle

Assignments here keep sending you back into your own building: look at what is actually happening, propose something you could realistically run next term, then test it against what the research says. It is the best thing about the program and the least forgiving, because the people grading it have stood in front of classes themselves and recognise invented detail immediately.

So the specifics get asked for before anything is written — the grade level, the subject, the population, whether it is a co-taught room, whether the curriculum is mandated by the district. Write about a classroom that could be anyone's and it will read like one. One written from a real constraint reads as professional practice, which is what the rubric is trying to reward.

The doctoral route does not fit in a block

A dissertation in practice will not compress into a single block, and the commonest way to lose twelve months is to keep trying. What it needs is a set of targets sized to chapters, spread over several terms, with the dates held by somebody who will actually ask about them.

A review board is involved as well, and studying your own classroom raises a real difficulty: consent given by people who depend on you is not straightforwardly free. Boards look hard at that. It is workable, but it has to be worked out while the design is still movable, since the resolution occasionally rules out the study you had in mind.

How it works.

1

Send the block and your week

The course, where you are in it, and roughly what your teaching week looks like. A reply comes within two hours.

2

Get a week ahead

The block mapped before the first assignment, with drafting scheduled in front of every date rather than against it.

3

Put the real room in

Grade, subject, population and constraint, so applied assignments read as professional practice rather than as theory.

Questions, asked and answered.

How do I fit a five-week block around a teaching timetable?

By being a week ahead of it rather than level with it, which is the only reliable defence. A block that short has no recovery week, so the evening you lose to a staffing crisis has to be one you already spent. Students who plan to work in the week the work is due are the ones who struggle.

Why do you need so much detail about my classroom?

Because ACE grades application, and your markers are educators who can tell a real setting from a generic one instantly. Grade level, subject, population, whether the curriculum is mandated, whether the room is co-taught — those details are not colour, they are where the marks are.

Is the EdD realistic while teaching full time?

For a great many people, yes, provided it is planned across blocks rather than inside them. The failure mode is treating the dissertation in practice as another five-week course; it needs chapter-sized targets with dates spanning terms and somebody other than you holding them.

What is awkward about researching my own students?

Consent, mainly. When you hold power over the participants — as a teacher does over a class, or a lead over colleagues — a review board will scrutinise whether consent can be freely given. It is solvable, and it needs solving before the design is fixed, because the answer occasionally changes what you are able to study.

Does Summagrad have a relationship with American College of Education?

No relationship of any kind. We are independent, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by ACE. The school is named because our specialists work in its blocks and know what its applied assignments ask for. Neither your school nor your employer hears anything from us.
